If so, you’ll need some helpful tips for how to keep your carpet clean when you have pets in your home. Vacuuming to keep your area rugs and carpets looking good is a must, but you’ll have to do a bit more if you want to keep your pet and keep your carpets looking and smelling good.
Vacuum Regularly If vacuuming isn’t on the list of your daily cleaning rituals, consider bumping it up to at least a couple of times a week if you have pets. Even when you can’t see dirt or hair, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Dirt, pet dander, and hair can stick to the fibers of your carpet. These can be particularly harmful if you have asthma or allergies. Vacuum as often as possible to reduce your symptoms.
Use Doormats and Runners When you have carpeting and pets, it can really save your flooring if you use doormats and runners in high-traffic areas. Not only are runners more affordable than new carpets, but they can be sent out to have a thorough cleaning. Watch our area rug cleaning video. Doormats are also carpet savers. These can be a place to kick off your shoes and catch some of the dirt and debris from your pet’s paws. While they may not wipe them on mats themselves, it can at least catch a little of the mess as they walk over them. Install Rug Padding under Rugs
To help protect the floors that lie beneath your rugs, use a latex-free rug pad with a pet barrier. The pet barrier blocks spills, even pet urine, from getting through to your floors beneath the rug.
Make sure that the padding you select does not have a latex backing. According to
the manufacturers of vinyl floor products, latex will discolor vinyl floors. Latex can sometimes have an odor from off-gassing chemicals. See our pet barrier rug pad product
Have Your Carpets Professionally Steam Cleaned
When you have pets, you’ll need to do more than a vacuum to deep clean your carpet. Steam cleaning is one of the best ways to disinfect and give your carpets a thorough cleaning.
While having a professional clean your carpets may seem expensive, it can save you from having to replace your flooring prematurely. If you’re selling your home after living with pets, it's a good idea to invest in a professional steam cleaning. You’ll want to remove any pet odors before a move-in inspection.
